In 2025 Q1, the TIPO received a total of 17,063 patent applications for invention (12,202 applications), utility model (3,232 applications) and design (1,629 applications). In comparison with 2024 Q1, the filings of 2025 Q1 were increased about 1%. The patent filings by resident and non-resident applicants accounted for 47% and 53%, respectively; the patent filings by domestics are decreased by 2%, while the filings by international applicants are increased by 5%.

Regarding trademark filings in 2025 Q1, the TIPO accepted 21,099 trademark registrations. Since multiple classes can be specified in one trademark application, the actual number of application classes was 27,445, an increase of 2% compared to 2024 Q1. Among them, 77% of the applications were filed by resident applicants and 23% of the registration were filed by non-resident applicants.

Resident applicants filed 4,355 invention patent applications, of which 3,534 were filed by enterprises. Among the top ten resident applicants of invention patent applications, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) ranked first (305 applications), followed by Nanya Technology (127 applications), Delta Electronics (82 applications), Innolux (80 applications), AU Optronics (76 applications), Realtek (72 applications), Foxconn (69 applications), MediaTek (59 applications), Inventec (54 applications) and Acer (47 applications). Among them, TSMC has ranked first for six consecutive years since 2020 Q1.

Regarding design patent applications, domestic applicants filed 682 design patent applications. The top five applicants were L&F Plastic Co., Ltd. (27 applications), Tarng Yu Enterprise Co. Ltd. (22 applications), Acer (18 applications), Crown MFG Corp. (12 applications), Tong Yah Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., Evolution Labs Co., Ltd., Shin Tai Garden Tools and Gudeng Precision Industrial Co., Ltd. (9 applications each).

Non-resident applicants filed 7,847 invention patent applications in 2025 Q1. The top five countries (regions) were Japan (3,538 applications), followed by the US (1,624 applications), South Korea (828 applications), Mainland China (706 applications) and Germany (230 applications). The number of applications from the top five major countries (regions) all showed positive growth.
 
The top ten non-resident applicants of invention patent applications were Applied Materials (US) (263 applications), followed by Tokyo Electron (Japan) (236 applications), Coupang (South Korea) (221 applications), Samsung Electronics (South Korea) (198 applications), Nitto Denko (Japan) (154 applications), Kioxia (Japan) (153 applications), Qualcomm (US) (144 applications), Fujifilm (Japan) (91 applications), Lam Research (US) (89 applications) and Panasonic Intellectual Property Management (Japan) (72 applications).

Non-resident applicants filed 947 design patent applications in 2025 Q1. The top five countries (regions) were US (219applications), followed by Japan (212 applications), Mainland China (160 applications), Switzerland (79 applications) and South Korea (54 applications). Among them, the filings by the US applicants surpassed Japanese applicants in 2025 Q1 and became the top 1 design patent application filers.
 
The top five non-resident applicants for design patent applications were Beijing Roborock (Mainland China) (58 applications), followed by Apple Inc. (US) (45 applications), Molex (United States) (37 applications), Harry Winston (Switzerland) (31 applications) and Renault S.A. (France) (30 applications). The number of applications from the top five non-resident applicants all showed positive growth.

Resident applicants filed 16,188 trademark registrations. Among the top ten applicants, Uni-President Enterprises ranked first (122 applications), followed by TSG Hawks (111 applications), Che Tai International Co. Ltd. (87 applications), Nan I Book Enterprise Co., Ltd. (83 applications), Ji Xinghan (75 applications), Amber Dongfu and A-TOP Health BIOTECH Inc. (43 applications each), Chunghwa Post (42 applications), ADAM Element (40 applications) and Videoland Television (38 applications). Except for Uni-President Enterprises, all the top ten applicants are experiencing positive growth.

The top three classes of trademark registrations filed by resident applicants are 3,179 applications in Class 35 (retail and business services), 1,529 applications in Class 43 (accommodation
and restaurant services), and 1,352 applications in Class 30 (foodstuffs from plant origin); indicating that trademark applications filed by resident manufacturers are mostly concentrated in business operations, restaurant and accommodation services related to people's livelihood consumption, and goods such as coffee and cakes.

Non-resident applicants filed 4,911 trademark applications. Among the top five countries (regions), Mainland China had the most (1,212 applications), followed by Japan (757 applications), the US (708 applications), South Korea (633 applications) and Singapore (223 applications). Except for Mainland China, the number of the applications in the other four countries increased, and Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea and Singapore have all achieved positive growth for two consecutive years.

Among the top five non-resident applicants for trademark filings, JYP Entertainment (South Korea) ranked first (63 applications), followed by MUSINSA (South Korea) (60 applications), Goodbaby International (Mainland China) (42 applications), the GR Operations (US) (41 applications) and Huawei (Mainland China) (34 applications). All the top five applicants see positive growth.
 
The top three classes of applications filed by non-resident applicant are, in order, 966 applications for Class 9 (technology), 623 applications for Class 35 (retail and business services), and 550 applications for Class 3 (cosmetics and personal care).

Among the trademark applications received by the TIPO, "agricultural food" ranked first among all industries (5,190 applications), followed by "health and medical" (4,337 applications) and "commercial finance" (4,289 applications).
 
In the top three industries, resident applicants filed the largest number of applications in the "agricultural food" classes (4,361 applications), mainly from applications in accommodation and restaurant services. Non-resident applicants filed the largest number of applications in the "technical research" classes (1,477 applications). In addition, the number of the applications by resident applicants in "business and finance" and the number of the applications by non-resident applicants in "technological research", "health and medical services" and "clothing accessories" were all growing positively.
