TIPO Releases the Beta Version of the “Image-Based Search for Domestic Design Patents”

2025-10-01 Patent Attorney - Paul X. B. Wang

To enhance the efficiency and convenience of design patent searches, the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) has launched a new beta feature “Image-Based Search for Domestic Design Patents” on the Industrial Patent Knowledge Platform (iPKM). Covering design patents published since 2013, the system adopts intelligent image comparison technology, allowing users to quickly locate similar cases by uploading images. This overcomes the limitations of traditional text-based searches and provides a more intuitive and precise method to support R&D innovation and rights management.

Key features of the system include:
-
Image upload and comparison: Users can upload images to search for similar cases. The system will automatically highlight the pattern portion in the uploaded image with a red frame.
-
Cropped image searches: In addition to full-image searches, the system contains a cropping tool enabling users to search based on a selected portion of an image.
-
Support of Locarno Classification: The system allows users to enter Locarno Classification classes (LOC), making it easier to explore cases in specific fields by combining image-based and classification-based queries.
-
Multiple filters: Search results can be further narrowed down by inventor, applicant, publication year and LOC class.
On the result page, users can check information such as publication numbers, application numbers, publication dates and LOC classes, select a case to browse the full drawings, or click the “Details” button to view the bibliographic data for a deeper understanding.

TIPO welcomes individuals from various sectors to explore the system.
